“All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud…Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand…” (Galatians 5:5-6)
This is a powerful passage of Scripture! It encapsulates some of the most fundamental of teachings of the New Testament. It gives us the code, the “rabbit’s foot” (for you Mission Impossible 3 fans) of true unity in Christ: humility toward God and one another. God makes it very clear that there is an absolute connection between our humility before God and one another. (1 Peter 5:5-6) It is impossible to be truly humble before God and not be humble before our brothers and sisters in Christ. Is that not what empowered us to be bonded and united with the church after our baptism? Once we are raised with Christ out of the watery grave, we are given the Holy Spirit that empowers us with the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-24)
The number of congregations that have stated their agreement and commitment to the Plan for United Cooperation is now up to 214! Your thousands of prayers are being answered! It has been so encouraging to see the number of churches that have publicly stated their commitment to and the application of these spiritual principles that are laid out in this plan.
I have not spoken to anyone who believes that simply stating a commitment to this plan will, by itself, restore or increase unity. We all know that the unity must come first from our recommitment to a true self-denial toward Christ as Lord; then, that same openness and humility can be (and needs to be) demonstrated toward our brothers and sisters in Christ.
Let’s continue to pray for God to deepen and increase our humility and unity.
