Bobby Ewing Effect #
This is the ardent desire to jump out of the shower and pretend that everything that happened in the previous year was only a dream. This worked to bring Bobby Ewing back from the dead, but has not been as effective in the real world.
Church of the English Majors #
This phrase refers to the emerging church movement. This specifically speaks to the tendency to refer to doctrine as a narrative or poem by emerging church supporters.
Disciple(htdm) #
In the ICoC subculture, it is common for different congregations to add to what is required to become saved. In Portland, for example, a potential Christian must have faith, repent of their sins, confess their sins, pledge submission to church authority, believe in God’s call to evangelize the world in one generation before they can be baptized.
Previously, this was taught as disciple = christian = saved now it appears that the equation is ‘fired up’ disciple=saved or ‘sold out’ disciple=saved. In the greek that would be, mathaytes = kristianos = sodayzo. Within some congregations, this has been replaced with hyperthermodynamathayes = sodayzo. For that reason, when I use the word disciple in future articles, I will differentiate the sense of the word. Disciple meaning ‘follower or student’ will be simply disciple. Disciple meaning ‘one who is saved’ will be believer. ‘Fired up’ or ‘sold out’ disciple as defined by disciple(htdm).
In short, htdm stands for my coined Greek word - hyperthermodynamathayes roughly over fired powered follower
HKL #
An acronym used by the ICoC Subculture to refer to the Henry Kreite Letter entitled +Honest to God+. This letter was originally intended for the higher leaders of the ICoC to be sent out in January of 2003. However, Matt Wolpert, sent this letter to some friends who subsequently sent it all over the world. Henry Kriete made a few revisions, then sent it out for mass distribution on Feb 2, 2003.
In this letter, many issues were raised about doctrine, the ICoC subculture as a whole, the negative retention rate, and the lifestyles of the highest leaders. The success of the letter to evoke change is measured differently throughout the spectrum of the ICoC subculture. Indeed, there are some that believe the letter should have never be released in the first place.
Mother of All Conferences #
With apologies to Saddam Hussein and Muhammed Saeed al-Sahhaf a.k.a. Baghdad Bob
This is the term referring to the various International Leadership Conferences held by the current congregations that make up the former ICoC. Below is the mascot for last year’s MOAC 2004.
National Get Over Yourself Day #
This is a much needed holiday within the ICoC Subculture. Although it may have positive benefits outside of the ICoC subculture, the focus and intent may be slightly different.
As far as the ICoC, this holiday would help members of the subculture deal with the fact that their voice alone will not create change. God is the only being that can create by fiat. May, including me, would do well to remember that.trying…
Post-HKL Renaissance #
This is the period in time that ICoC congregations enjoyed a time of the most dynamic change. This period lasted from roughly Feb 2, 2003 (General distribution of the Henry Kriete Letter) until Feburary or March of 2004. By March 2004, most of the staff changes and moves had already taken place.
Postmodern Day Movement of God #
Kip McKean always claimed that the ICoC was the Modern Day Movement of God, implying and directly stating (yes, he did) that to be saved, one had to be a part of the ICoC. Now that he has begun again and looks to begin a new movement, he can’t use “Modern Day Movement of God” as the ICoC still exists as a corporation and an ideology. What do you call the movement that comes after the Modern Day Movement of God? The Post-Modern Day Movement of God, of course.
This is not to be confused with the
\[\[Church of English Majors|Church of the English Majors\]] that attempts conversations with the postmodern world.
Reaganomic Spirituality #
The is not unique to the ICoC Subculture.
This is the belief that if the leaders of a church have their needs met, the benefits will trickle down to the membership of the church.
Smurf Village #
With apologies to Peyo.
The best way to describe it is to read the post about it .
In short, Smurf Village is a metaphor for life in the old ICoC. In some congregations, life is still like Smurf Village.
====== Welcome to the Phrase Mint ======
Oxford’s Unabridged Dictionary has over 500,000 entries describing the English language. Yet, with these are other entries, there seems to be a need in modern America to coin new words. I contend that creating new words is unnecessary and lazy. However, I believe creating new phrases is helpful in that a phrase creates new metaphors. New words only isolate meaning among those that understand the code, but a good metaphor invites understanding. I’m not saying that I am successful in my endeavor, but I have such a bad habit of coining phrases, that I wanted a place to explain them.

==== Mutual Appreciation Society ====
Under the old ICoC structure, this referred to the conference before the conference made up of only the leaders.
Under the current ICoC subculture, this refers to the various leadership conferences, or conjugal visits made by leadership of one ICoC congregation to another in order to receive ‘outside’ help.
It is curious to note that outside help in the ICoC subculture means ICoC leaders in another city to some (usually current leaders) or leaders outside the ICoC subculture to others (usually former members).
